It’s true that you might receive a wide range of moving tips from your friends and neighbors. They might give you suggestions even though they have a limited experience in relocation. Packing can be time consuming and tedious, but doing it properly–and with the proper materials–is essential to ensure your belongings are protected.

If you’re unsure of how to best pack your belongings, you may wish to hire professionals to help. However, you may not have much luck during the busier moving season (summer) or you may wish to purchase higher-quality supplies. Call around and ask local moving companies for prices (or check their websites). You can also visit places like uHaul or FedEx.

As you pack your items, be sure to divide things up by weight so that none of your boxes become too heavy. Trying to life a bunch of heavy boxes can cause strain on your knees or back. As you pack valuables, be sure you generously apply protective packing materials, such as wrapping fragile items in newspaper and bubble wrap, and adding packing peanuts (or an equivalent) to fill up empty space so your belongings don’t rattle around.

Be sure to label each box to make unpacking easier. At the very least, write “FRAGILE” in big letters on boxes that contain breakable items, and write the name of the room where the box should go. We also recommend taking a bit of time to write out the contents of the box on the top flap. This makes it easier to determine which boxes you should unpack first in your new home.

Tips for Moving Paintings

If you’re planning a move and have paintings hanging on the walls in your home, this article is for you! We know that paintings are valuable and hold sentiment for many people, so it’s important to protect them properly during a move.

If you hire the professionals at Texas State Movers, you can rest easy knowing your priceless art is safe in our hands. However, if you decide to go it alone, we’ve put together some tips to keep in mind during your move to help reduce the chances that your paintings become damaged.

If your paintings are oil on canvas, it’s important that the painting is completely dry before the move. Unfortunately, it can take up to half a year for the oil to dry all the way, so it does take some planning ahead. Once the painting is fully dry (of if you don’t need to worry about this step), you can begin packaging them up:

1) Buy high-quality packing supplies. You’ll need sturdy boxes and bubble wrap. Ensure that the boxes you purchase fit snugly but provide enough room for bubble wrap.

2) If any of your paintings have glass in the frame, make an X out of tape across the four corners to prevent damage to the painting in case the glass breaks during the move.

3) Wrap your paintings. If your paintings are in frames, leave them–it’s much more difficult to take them out and put them back in properly than to leave them assembled. Wrap each separate piece with non-printed newspaper, then wrap each peiece with bubble wrap. Be generous when wrapping, it’s better to use too much than not enough.

4) Next, tape cardboard around each piece, then slide it into a sturdy, fitted picture box. Be sure to write “FRAGILE” in large letters… better to be safe than sorry!

5) Carefully load your artwork into the moving truck. Try and secure them between items so they don’t go sliding around, and always set them down gently when loading/unloading.

Protecting Hardwood Floors in Your New Home

You’re finally situated in your new home. You’ve gotten all your boxes and furniture moved in thanks to the help of a moving company (or maybe you went it alone!) and you’ve gotten most of your belongings unpacked. Good work! Now it’s time to make upgrades and keep your home looking great so that you and your family enjoy it for years to come.

Does your new home have a hardwood floor? Or, have you decided to have one installed? They’re great to have in any home–cleanup is a breeze compared to carpets, and they look great to boot. But hardwood floors are expensive and can add value to your home (many buyers prefer hardwood), so it’s important to take care of them. Luckily, this is easy to do, simply follow our tips and your hardwood floors will look great for years to come.

The first thing to keep in mind is that spills need to be tended to immediately. This is true of any type of flooring, but hardwood can become damaged from prolonged exposure to spilled liquids. Leaving liquid untended can cause discoloration, which is undesirable at best. The longer the spill sits, the more likely it is that it will seep underneath and cause real damage, including cracking and warping. So be vigilant and swoop in as soon as you become aware of any spills. Also, be sure your hardwood has a good coat of finishing to prevent these types of mishaps. Rugs can also come in handy in kitchens and bathrooms where a lot of splashing and spillage can occur.

Speaking of rugs: rugs are a worthwhile investment, and not just because they’re good for preventing water damage. They can also prevent damage in places where there’s a lot of foot traffic. Think about the flooring near doorways, including entryways and hallways. Many people don’t remove their shoes immediately upon entering a house, and there’s always a chance that there are little bits of rocks caught in the soles of the shoes which can scuff up your beautiful floors. So keep welcome mats near your doorways and encourage family and guests to remove their shoes as they come inside. Hallways often experience high foot traffic, and floor runners are long rugs–perfect for hallways. You can find them in just about any color, so you’re sure to find something that goes with your home’s color scheme.

Bonus Tip: you can use your rugs to aid in rearranging furniture in your house. Instead of dragging heavy tables and chairs across your nice floors, lift up each corner and slide a rug underneath. Then you can scoot things around without worrying about scraping everything up!

We should also mention… sunlight kills! Not really, of course, as almost everyone loves sunlight and it’s great in moderation. However, your hardwood floors aren’t huge fans. Too much direct sunlight can discolor your floors and eat away at some finishings. Some woods darken with exposure, and others get lighter; neither looks very good when the rest of the floor is the color is should be. Be sure you have curtains up to help prevent sunlight from beaming down on your floors day in and day out. Also, try to avoid using oil-based finish on your floors as it may cause yellowing after too much sunlight exposure.

And, last but not least, treat your floor like a high-end car. And by that we mean be sure to polish your floor every now and then–at least once a year. You can buy good floor wax for relatively cheap, and it’s a great investment to help prevent scratching and moisture damage.

Summer is here! You know what that means… time to fire up the BBQ grill, hit the river, and relax with friends and family. But summer is also the busiest season for moving.  Summertime is the ideal time for relocation for many for a variety of reasons. The weather conditions tend to be better for moving; it may be hotter, but summer offers many nice days that are ideal for moves.  You have more time to get acclimated to your new area, and kids are out of school for the summer.  For a variety of reasons, many people choose to move during the summer – making it the busiest season of the year for Dallas-Fort Worth moving companies.

If you’re one of the many in the Dallas-Fort Worth/Plano area that plan on moving this summer, there’s a few things you should keep in mind. The first of which is to be wary of movers schedules.
